How Much Does a Private India Food Tour Cost?
There is no honest single number here, and anyone who gives you one before asking where you want to go is quoting a package rather than a trip. What follows is what actually moves the figure, so you can tell a fair quote from a padded one and decide where your money is best spent.
Season moves the price more than anything else
India's travel calendar is sharply seasonal, and the good months are the expensive ones. October to March is when most of the country is comfortable, when the major festivals fall, and when hotels know it. A trip in that window costs meaningfully more than the same trip in the shoulder season, and the difference is not the operator taking a margin — it is what rooms and cars genuinely cost that week.
Festival dates are the sharpest version of this. Accommodation near a major festival is priced like accommodation near a major sporting final, and it sells out months ahead. If your dates are fixed to a festival, that constraint sets your floor.
Where you go matters more than how far you go
Distance is cheap in India. Access is not. A circuit through cities with good hotel supply and short hops between them costs less per day than one that reaches somewhere genuinely remote, because the remote leg brings flights, longer drives, thinner accommodation choice and sometimes permits.
The Northeast and Ladakh are the clearest examples: extraordinary places to eat, and structurally more expensive to reach and move around than an equivalent number of days in Rajasthan or Kerala.
How you sleep is the biggest lever you control
For most food-led trips, accommodation is the single largest line, and it is also the one with the widest range. The same fourteen days can be built around characterful mid-range properties or around palace hotels, and the food, the hosts and the markets do not change between those two versions. If you have a budget you are trying to hold, this is the lever that moves it without hollowing out the trip.
How much of the day is arranged
A trip where every meal is a booked experience — a home dinner with a family, a cooking session, a market walk with someone who knows the sellers — costs more than one with two or three anchored experiences and space left around them. It is not always better. Most people underestimate how much they will want an unplanned afternoon by day five.
A dedicated Travel Manager is a real cost too, and worth being clear-eyed about: it buys you someone accountable for the whole trip rather than a series of separate suppliers. For a first visit, or a trip built around dates that cannot move, that is usually where it earns out.
What should be included, and what quietly is not
When comparing quotes, the differences are usually hiding here rather than in the headline. Ask specifically:
- Are internal flights and station transfers in, or added later?
- Which meals are actually included — and are the signature experiences among them, or extra?
- Is there a car and driver for the whole trip, or only on transfer days?
- Are entry fees, permits and festival access included where they apply?
- Are tips and staff gratuities expected on top, and roughly what is normal?
- What happens, and what does it cost, if you change a date once you are there?
Where the money is genuinely worth spending
If you are trading things off, spend on access and on people rather than on thread count. A home kitchen you would never have found, a market walk with someone the sellers actually know, and a fixer who can get you into a festival properly are the parts you cannot replicate on your own afterwards. A better hotel room is the part you can always buy later.
Common questions
Why won't you just publish a price?
Because the honest answer depends on your dates, your route and how you want to sleep, and a published figure would be either misleadingly low or padded to cover every case. Every fofees journey is quoted individually against the trip you actually want.
Is a private food tour more expensive than a group tour?
Per person, usually yes — a group splits the guide, the vehicle and the fixed costs across more people. What you get for the difference is dates that suit you, a route built around what you want to eat, and access that does not work at group scale, like a family's kitchen.
When is the cheapest time to visit India for food?
The shoulder months either side of the main October-to-March window. The food does not get worse — much of it is seasonal and some of the best regional produce falls outside peak tourist season — but the heat or the monsoon will shape where it is sensible to go.
How far ahead should I book?
For a festival-anchored trip, as far ahead as you can; access and nearby accommodation are the constraint and both go early. For a food-led trip on flexible dates, a few months is usually comfortable.
